Have you ever dreamed of embarking on an incredible high-altitude adventure that offers breathtaking views and a true sense of accomplishment? Look no further than the renowned Laguna 69 hike, a thrilling journey that promises unforgettable memories in the heart of Peru.
Early Rise and Excitement
My Laguna 69 adventure began at the crack of dawn, precisely at 4:45 in the morning, in the town of Huaraz. The tour company (I regret to say, the name escapes me) promptly picked me up from my cozy hostel, Kame House. The price for this incredible experience was a mere 50 soles, a true bargain for the adventure that awaited.
A Straightforward Ascent
The hike itself was surprisingly straightforward, taking me approximately two hours to reach the pinnacle. Admittedly, I was well-acclimatized and trained, having already spent four weeks acclimatizing to the high altitudes of Peru through various hikes. This prior preparation allowed me to arrive at the top ahead of the crowd, ensuring that I had the serene Laguna 69 almost entirely to myself.
At the lake, only three independent travellers and a vigilant national park guard had arrived before me. Taking the advice of some friendly hostel acquaintances, I decided to extend my journey further by heading to a nearby viewpoint. This decision rewarded me with the privilege of having the viewpoint all to myself, without the presence of national park guards to restrict my actions. This allowed me to fly my drone, a unique experience that added an extra layer of wonder to an already breathtaking adventure.
Preparation is Key
After indulging in a two-hour break at the summit, the group gradually began its descent. Following suit, I decided to make my way back to the bus. This is when I realized the importance of being well-prepared for this hike. Some members of the group struggled significantly and barely managed to reach the bus in time.
I cannot emphasize enough the necessity of proper footwear and adequate preparation. It appeared that a fair number of fellow hikers were there primarily for Instagram-worthy photos but lacked the necessary hiking experience. As a result, many found themselves pushed to their limits, unable to fully appreciate the stunning surroundings due to their exhaustion.
In conclusion, the Laguna 69 hike is an absolute must-do for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. However, it’s vital to come prepared, both physically and mentally, to fully savor this extraordinary journey. Don’t let the allure of social media push you into an experience that might not match your fitness level. With the right shoes, acclimatization, and a sense of adventure, you’ll create memories that will last a lifetime on this epic trek in Huaraz.
