Uetliberg is the iconic local mountain of Zurich. Standing prominently on the city doorstep, it offers a distinct urban soaring experience where pilots can fly over the forested ridge with views taking in the Zurich cityscape, the Limmat valley, and the sparkling expanse of Lake Zurich towards the Alps.
FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS AND WIND
Uetliberg is a specialized dynamic soaring site tailored for steady Bise (East and North East) winds. The ideal wind velocity is between fifteen and twenty five kilometers per hour. When the Bise blows directly into the forested ridge, it creates a consistent band of dynamic lift above the trees. Because the takeoff is a compact woodland clearing, launching in calm air or light cycles is not viable. Pilots must possess reliable reverse inflation skills to bring the glider overhead and inspect the canopy before committing down the slope.

FLIGHT IMPRESSIONS
LAUNCH SITE
The takeoff area is situated on the ridge crest near Balderen and Fallätsche, about a twenty minute walk along the ridge path from the mountain train station. The launch consists of a small grassy clearing cut out of the trees. Pilots must be proficient at groundhandling so they can check their wing carefully before running down the narrow incline. Launching in zero wind or crosswinds is strongly discouraged.
LANDING SITE
The primary landing field is located at Leimbach at approximately 450 meters above sea level. Pilots should fly a standard right hand landing circuit and aim for the lower half of the meadow. Key hazards include a marked power line running along the bottom path and nearby farm buildings. Groundhandling on the landing field is allowed only when the local indicator sign displays green. For longer glides, Allmend Brunau can serve as an alternative landing field.
AIRSPACE AND SAFETY
Because Uetliberg is situated near Zurich International Airport, the surrounding airspace is strictly controlled within the Zurich CTR and Terminal Maneuvering Areas. Pilots must strictly adhere to the maximum ceiling limits published on the Swiss Segelflugkarte. Flying east across the Limmat river into airport approach sectors is strictly forbidden. Contributing a seasonal fee via the local Uetlibergkarte supports the upkeep of the flying area.
GPS FOR CAR AND GETTING THERE
Uetliberg is easily reached by Zurich public transport. Take the SZU train S10 from Zurich main station directly to Uetliberg, or take tram 13 to Albisgütli and hike up the mountain trail. Drivers can park at Albisgüetli or Uitikon and hike to the takeoff clearing.
