SPOT OVERVIEW
Rigi Seebodenalp is located on a broad alpine plateau on the western shoulder of Mount Rigi at approximately 1020 meters above sea level. Gazing out over Lake Lucerne, the historic town of Küssnacht am Rigi, and the plains of Zug, Seebodenalp is widely loved as the quintessential afternoon and evening soaring spot of the region.
FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS AND WIND
Facing west and northwest, Seebodenalp comes into its prime in the afternoon as the sun warms the western face of Mount Rigi. When a westerly or northwesterly breeze establishes itself, dynamic slope soaring allows pilots to cruise gently along the mountain ridge until sunset. It is an exceptionally welcoming site for beginner pilots and relaxed sunset flights, though summer midday thermal bubbles can occasionally create active air near the forested gullies.

FLIGHT IMPRESSIONS
LAUNCH SITE
The takeoff area is located about ten minutes on foot from the Seebodenalp cable car mountain station, set on the pasture between the station and Alpwirtschaft Ruwidisegg. It is a large, gently sloping meadow that offers generous room for unpacking and launching multiple wings. During the summer grazing season, dairy cattle share the pastures, so pilots should show respect to livestock, step around cow dung, and avoid snagging lines on electric fences.
LANDING SITE
The official landing field is located at Küssnacht am Rigi near Eichholtern, right next to the cable car valley station at 460 meters above sea level. A windsock marks the field. Critical regulation: The adjacent Ebnet landing area is reserved strictly for hang gliders (deltas), and landing paragliders there is strictly prohibited. Always pack gliders near the field borders.
AIRSPACE AND SAFETY
Seebodenalp borders the controlled airspace of military airfield Emmen. Stay aware of lateral airspace limits to the west towards Lucerne. As always in Central Switzerland, flying during active south foehn must be strictly avoided.
GETTING THERE AND ACCESS
Travel by train or car to Küssnacht am Rigi. The Luftseilbahn Küssnacht Seebodenalp (LKSR) carries pilots up to the plateau in approximately eight minutes, with parking available at the valley station. Alternatively, a paved private toll road leads directly from Küssnacht up to Seebodenalp.
