The Zugerberg flight area is situated above the historic city of Zug in Central Switzerland, offering wide panoramic vistas across Lake Zug, Mount Rigi, and the Pilatus massif. It is one of the most accessible and frequented regional flying spots, cherished by local pilots for its welcoming terrain, convenient public transit access, and relaxed soaring conditions from early spring through autumn.
FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS AND WIND
Zugerberg functions primarily as a west wind flying site. In springtime, the open western hillside absorbs solar radiation and generates pleasant thermal updrafts, allowing pilots to climb comfortably above the crest and venture on short local cross country explorations. When a steady westerly breeze sets in, the slope produces smooth dynamic ridge soaring that can last until sunset. Top landings on the spacious launch pasture are frequently possible for pilots who possess confident canopy control. Flying during strong east Bise wind or gusty prefrontal conditions is not possible.

LAUNCH SITE
The launch meadow is located approximately ten minutes on foot from the Zugerberg funicular mountain station. It consists of a broad, gently sloping grassy pasture that allows easy layout and preparation for multiple gliders. The gentle gradient offers forgiving conditions for forward launches in light cycles and provides an ideal setup for reverse inflation when a steady breeze is blowing up the slope. Pilots are asked to walk strictly along the forest and meadow perimeter to protect agricultural fields. A nominal fee of two Swiss Francs per launch applies for guest pilots, which directly supports the local club and land agreements.
LANDING SITE
The official landing field is located at Oberwil at approximately 412 meters above sea level, equipped with a clearly visible windsock. Pilots should inspect the field prior to flying and execute a standard landing approach circuit. Private vehicles must never be driven onto the landing meadow, and gliders should always be packed away along the edge of the field. Please avoid stepping into tall grass areas east of the windsock during growing season. An emergency alternate landing option exists down near the lake shore at Brüggli.
AIRSPACE AND SAFETY
Zugerberg sits under the broader Zurich terminal maneuvering airspace and borders the military airspace sector of Emmen. Always verify current airspace ceilings on the Swiss aviation chart before takeoff. Be cautious of agricultural electric fences along the takeoff meadow boundaries, and never launch if south foehn or incoming stormy fronts are forecasted.
GETTING THERE AND ACCESS
Public transit provides seamless access. Take bus line 11 from the Zug railway station directly to the Schönegg valley station, then ride the Zugerberg funicular railway to the top. From the mountain station, a signposted footpath leads to the takeoff meadow in about ten minutes.
