Flowing out of Lake Todos los Santos inside Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, the Petrohué River is widely regarded as one of the cleanest and most scenic rivers in southern Chile. The crystal clear water, sourced directly from glacial snowfields, boasts exceptional purity and drinking water clarity, flowing through dense Valdivian temperate rainforest beneath the snowcapped cone of Volcán Osorno.
This Christmas Day white water rafting excursion tackled Class III and IV rapids along a thirteen kilometer stretch of the river, with the towering volcano I had climbed just two days prior rising dramatically in the background.

Outfitter bases in Ensenada and Puerto Varas provide all necessary white water equipment, including full body neoprene wetsuits, neoprene booties, splash jackets, life vests, and helmets.
Tours are led by licensed river guides with safety kayakers accompanying each raft. The summer season between November and April offers consistent water flows and comfortable daytime temperatures.
THE ROUTE AND TRAIL REPORT
River Safety Briefing: After suiting up in wetsuits, the group gathers at the river bank for a thorough safety briefing covering paddle commands, brace positions, and river swimming techniques. The clarity of the turquoise water is immediately striking, with visibility extending meters down to volcanic river stones on the riverbed.
Class III Rapids: The descent starts with rolling wave trains that quickly escalate into exciting Class III rapids, including the famous El Cañón and Salto del Indio sections. Paddling in unison on the guide command, the raft punches through standing waves and navigates around basalt boulders formed by ancient lava flows.
Views of Volcán Osorno: Between turbulent rapid sections, the river opens into calm, emerald pools. Floating along these peaceful stretches offers breathtaking views of the surrounding rainforest canyon and the glaciated peak of Volcán Osorno, providing a unique vantage point of the mountain from river level.
